History Temirtau
1905, june, 15 - first groups of settlers (see stolypin reform) settled down on left bank of nura river. there 40 families, had arrived samara. settlement founded named zhaur (Жаур), after hill on other side of river.
1909 - zhaur settlement renamed samarkandsky (Самаркандский, or samarkand short).
1911 - first school , first hospital built.
1933 - samarkandsky-karaganda water conduit built facilitate development of karaganda coal field.
1939 - 20-by-300-metre (66 ft × 984 ft) dam (50°06′17″n 72°55′08″e / 50.10472°n 72.91889°e / 50.10472; 72.91889) erected across nura river. filling of resulting samarkand water reservoir initiated, , continued 1961.
1942 - first turbine of karaganda state regional electric power station started up. construction of power plant building started in 1934
1944 - still under construction, kazakh steel mill yielded first steel, smelted in open-hearth (siemens-martin) furnace.
1945, october, 1 - samarkand settlement granted city status , renamed temirtau ( iron mountain in kazakh)
1947-1949 - japanese prisoners-of-war kept in camp near town.
1950 - future karaganda steel mill founded. build ussr announced nationwide high-intensive construction project , , lot of youth shock-worker brigades gathered parts of soviet union , ally countries (mainly bulgaria).
1959 - riots , insurrections among workers dissatisfied poor working , living conditions , interruptions in supply of water, food, goods, tools etc. - result of numerous mistakes committed administration. clashes took toll. workers: 16 fatalities, 27 wounded, 70 arrested , convicted. police: 28 wounded.
1960 - blast furnace no. 1 yielded first cast iron.
1963 - karaganda polytechnical institute (now karaganda metallurgical institute) founded higher technical educational institution attached karaganda steel mill.
1970s - new sports complex built, including 50 m swimming pool, stadium seats 15,000 , indoor ice-skating/hockey rink.
1972 - metallurgists palace of culture opened.
1978 - vostok recreational park laid out in eastern part of city , opened public.
1978, july, 29 - warrior monument eternal flame dedicated honor of temirtau soldiers killed in world war ii.
1984 - new residential area, zenica , established. named in honour of zenica, temirtau s twin-town in bosnia , herzegovina (former yugoslavia)
1993, january - winter garden opened in vostok park
1995 - karaganda steel mill transferred ispat international, renamed ispat-karmet , became present mittal steel temirtau, comes under arcelormittal group.
