according tradition, benedictine abbey of herrenchiemsee established 765 ad agilolfing duke tassilo iii of bavaria @ northern tip of herreninsel. new findings indicate earlier foundation between 620 , 629 burgundian missionary saint eustace of luxeuil, making oldest monastery in duchy of bavaria, established 70 years earlier st peter s abbey in salzburg.


in 969 emperor otto consigned abbey archbishops of salzburg. benedicitne monastery, herrenchiemsee 1130 re-established convent of canons regulars living under rule of st. augustine. construction of new romanesque basilica, dedicated sts sixtus , sebastian, completed in 1158.


in 1215, approval of pope innocent iii, salzburg archbishop eberhard von regensburg made monastery church cathedral of suffragan diocese in own right, bishopric of chiemsee, including several parishes on mainland , in tyrol. augustinian convent acted cathedral chapter, while auxiliary bishops retained seat @ chiemseehof palace in salzburg. herrenchiemsee chapter headed provosts 1218 held position of archdeacon. obtained pontifical vestments , right of papal count palatines in 15th century.


the present-day baroque monastery complex erected between 1642 , 1731. in course of german mediatisation, herrenchiemsee abbey secularised in 1803, cathedral desecrated in 1807, , chiemsee diocese dissolved in 1808. island sold; various owners demolished cathedral, sold interior, , turned abbey brewery. king ludwig ii of bavaria ward off plans complete deforestation of island württemberg timber trade company, when acquired herrenchiemsee in 1873. had leftover buildings converted private use, complex later became known old palace , stayed surveying construction of new herrenchiemsee palace.


from 10 23 august 1948, representatives of eleven german states of western zones , west berlin met @ old palace verfassungskonvent (constitutional convention) prepare work drafting basic law (grundgesetz) view founding of federal republic of germany.
