during second world war evacuees poured harrogate cities. swelled roll @ school 900, still small number compared roll of 1740 in 2006.


to keep pace these numbers there have been various periods of building expansion, notably in 1970s addition of sports hall, gymnasium, music, reflexology , technology facilities.


between 1976–77 new sports hall built new classroom block. enabled removal of temporary classrooms situated in old playground. weather shale pitch, hockey, created @ otley road end of playing field. new sixth form block, including common room, new library , new science labs added, these situated rear , eastern aspect of school. has been further extended. humanities building added in 1990s.


in 2002 harrogate grammar school acquired specialist language status , has state-of-the-art language-learning facilities , services of 6 native speaker language assistants each year. in 2006 school recognised extremely successful specialist school , invited take on second specialism in technology. new-build library , suite opened in july 2006. temporary classrooms sixth form added in october 2006, , these expected stay on school grounds until new sixth form arrangements have been built.


in 2010, harrogate grammar school opened new sixth form block ever-expanding higher education 16–19 section. sixth form has lecture theatre retractable seating of 300, number of classrooms , cloister area. new building replaces old temporary classrooms adjoined arthur s avenue nursery knocked down.


in 2011, following government s plans turn high performing comprehensive schools in uk academies, school granted academy status, giving school more flexibility in operation including school curriculum. school independent academy trust .


plans made expand sixth form centre, opening expected in september 2012. include new café , increased study space in area occupied gate , , sited on home-grown garden has been relocated outside sixth form entrance. extension opened in 2013 sherwood wing , named after mrs jan sherwood, former sixth form director, contribution school.
