thomas voeckler passes @ cassel, followed luis Ángel maté, 2 minutes ahead of peloton.


the first stage in france departed seaside resort of le touquet, racing officially starting east of cucq. first climb of day category 4 climb of côte de campagnette, 34 km (21 mi) stage, north of bimont. @ 159 m (522 ft), highest point of relatively fast , flat stage, travelled through undulating lowlands of nord-pas-de-calais. route passed through saint-omer, intermediate sprint @ cassel. race travelled through steenvoorde, on category 4 climb of mont noir, , followed road south-east bailleul , armentières lille. stage finished east of centre of lille, @ villeneuve-d ascq.


andy schleck retired tour, before departure le touquet. few kilometres stage, chris froome fell in accident involved bauke mollema , ion izagirre. froome able rejoin peloton. time race had reached top of mont noir, thomas voeckler in front of peloton along luis Ángel maté. greg henderson forced retire, following crash towards end of race, whilst voeckler caught peloton 16 km (10 mi) remaining, maté returning bunch around time. peloton ready, once again, sprint finish. marcel kittel won third stage out of four, admitted stage had been fast , nervous.
