the alexander hamilton monument on hamilton avenue, adjacent hamilton park, site of second memorial burr-hamilton duel between alexander hamilton , aaron burr. first, on original duel site, constructed in 1806 saint andrew society, of hamilton had been member. 14-foot (4.3-m) marble cenotaph, consisting of obelisk, topped flaming urn , plaque quote horace, surrounded iron fence, constructed approximately hamilton believed have fallen. duels continued fought @ site, , marble vandalized , removed souvenirs, leaving nothing remaining 1820. tablet did survive, turning in junk store , finding way new-york historical society in manhattan, still resides.


from 1820 1857, site marked 2 stones, names hamilton , burr, placed thought have stood during duel. when road hoboken fort lee built through site in 1858, inscription on boulder mortally wounded hamilton thought have rested—one of many pieces of graffiti left visitors—was remained. no primary accounts of duel confirm boulder anecdote. in 1870, railroad tracks built directly through site, , boulder hauled top of palisades, remains today, located off boulevard east. in 1894, iron fence built around boulder, supplemented bust of hamilton , plaque. bust thrown on cliff on october 14, 1934, vandals, , head never recovered; new bust unveiled on july 12, 1935.


the plaque stolen vandals in 1980s, , abbreviated version of text inscribed on indentation left in boulder, remained until 1990s, when granite pedestal added in front of boulder, , bust moved top of pedestal. new historical markers added on july 11, 2004, 200th anniversary of duel.
