the offensive french second army forced falkenhayn divert xxi , bavarian corps arrived, extend front northwards chaulnes péronne on 24 september , drive french on somme. overcrowded , damaged railways behind german front slowed transit of german forces , infantry marched namur , cambrai. on 25 september, german reinforcements attacked, crossed somme south of péronne , advanced take bridge between hem , feuillères. french attack north of somme against ii bavarian corps, forced hurried withdrawal. more bavarian units arrived in north, 3rd bavarian division advanced north of somme through bouchavesnes, leforest , hardecourt until held @ maricourt. 4th bavarian division further north, defeated french territorials , attacked westwards towards albert, through sailly, combles, guillemont , montauban.


on 27 september, ii cavalry corps drove 61st , 62nd reserve divisions (general joseph brugère, d amade had been replaced), make way xiv reserve corps link right flank of ii bavarian corps, ready attack towards albert. french subdivision d armée (general louis de maud huy) began assemble @ arras , de maud huy found instead of making attempt round german flank, subdivision menaced german offensive. ii bavarian , xiv reserve corps pushed french territorial division area around bapaume , advanced towards bray-sur-somme , albert, part of offensive down somme valley reach sea. german offensive confronted north of somme french xxi , x corps , 81st, 82nd, 84th , 88th territorial divisions (brugère) further north , 1st, 3rd, 5th , 10th cavalry divisions of ii cavalry corps (general louis conneau), east of albert.







the xiv reserve corps attacked on 28 september, along roman road bapaume albert , amiens, intending reach ancre , continue westwards along somme valley. 28th reserve division advanced close fricourt, against scattered resistance french infantry , cavalry. on 28 september, french able stop german advance, on line maricourt fricourt , thiépval. german ii cavalry corps, moved north held near arras, french ii cavalry corps. on 29 september, 28th reserve division attacked fricourt , captured village prevented french small-arms , artillery-fire, advancing beyond. north of road, 26th reserve division advance stopped french. next day french units counter-attacked several times , recaptured fricourt.


a lull in fighting occurred overnight , both sides began dig in haphazardly, opposing lines had stopped moving, not on defended ground. @ maricourt, 5 km (3.1 mi) south, german advance had been stopped short of village. north of road, 26th reserve division fought capture high ground of bazentin ridge, overlooked ancre valley instead of rolling french northern flank, endangered reciprocal french attack. (the french attack reached sapignies behind right flank, until counter-attacked guards corps, arrived @ bapaume on 2 october.) joffre added x corps, 32 km (20 mi) north of amiens, ii cavalry corps, south-east of arras , provisional corps under general victor d urbal, had 77th reserve division south-east of arras , 70th reserve division in lens, subdivision renamed tenth army, make outflanking move near arras.
