biochemistry – biochemistry department started in 1993 @ postgraduate level , became separate department in 2002. 1 of first independent departments of biochemistry in india. 2015 department had trained on 400 biochemists.

information technology – department of information technology established in 2007, spin-off department of computer science. offers bca, msc computer science, , msc information technology. offers postgraduate diploma in computer science , applications, ict enabled teaching , learning.

mathematics – department of mathematics founded college in 1844, when offered postgraduate courses. in 1911 university of madras granted permission run honours course in mathematics.

history – department of history began college in 1844. ba in history introduced when college affiliated university of madras. when in 1911 college became arts , science college, honours course in history introduced. during period library stack room in history section flooded primary sources such dispatches east india company, annual reports of archaeological survey of india, inscription manuals, , gazetteers. number of students dwindled , department closed down, ba honours course continuing 1960. ba history revived in 1977. in 2014 department offers ba. ma, mphil, , phd. has strong research orientation, producing 42 phds , 320 mphil scholars since 1977. faculty members have authored 16 books both in english , tamil , published 70 research papers on history , related areas. biannual research journal indian historical studies has been published department since october 2004, financially supported indian council of historical research, new delhi.

sanskrit – department of sanskrit started in 1907. application oriented courses in sanskrit beginners started along autonomous system. curriculum under autonomy revised include prosody new subject , modified suit present needs of society, keeping abreast of latest developments.

tamil – 1 of oldest departments. ba tamil started in 1882 , ma tamil in 1995. recognized research department in 1986.

business administration – department of business administration had origin in department of economics. department began function independently academic year 2002 onwards st. joseph s institute of management.

commerce – department of commerce opened in 1948, offering three-year bcom degree. in 1954 suspended , in 1957 revived. postgraduate course (mcom) started in 1988. department started full-time mphil course in 2001 , full-time phd research programme in 2003. in 2002 specialized ma transport management launched, two-year postgraduate course.the department had legendary professors such prof.m.p.vellore whom students still cherish method of teaching.

commerce computer applications – undergraduate degree course in commerce computer application (bcomca) started in year 2008, , mcomca added in 2011.
