especially since emergence of yuta tabuse , takuya kawamura, basketball has received recent revival , become popular sport in japan. japan national basketball team won fiba asia championship twice , has qualified event 25 out of 26 times. japan host 2006 fiba world championship played in host cities of hamamatsu, hiroshima, saitama, sapporo , sendai.

in 2010 japan basketball association recognized takehiko inoue, creator of slam dunk, series role in popularizing sport in japan part of 80th anniversary celebrations.
