one of waterhouse s famous paintings lady of shalott, study of elaine of astolat, dies of grief when lancelot not love her. painted 3 different versions of character, in 1888, 1894, , 1916. of waterhouse s favorite subjects ophelia; famous of paintings of ophelia depicts before death, putting flowers in hair sits on tree branch leaning on lake. lady of shalott , other waterhouse paintings, deals woman dying in or near water. may have been inspired paintings of ophelia dante gabriel rossetti , john everett millais. submitted ophelia painting of 1888 in order receive diploma royal academy. (he had wanted submit painting titled mermaid , not completed in time.) after this, painting lost until 20th century, , displayed in collection of lord lloyd-webber. waterhouse paint ophelia again in 1894 , 1909 or 1910, , planned painting in series, called ophelia in churchyard .


waterhouse not finish series of ophelia paintings because gravely ill cancer 1915. died 2 years later, , grave can found @ kensal green cemetery in london.
