0 series 12-car set sk5 on west hikari service, march 1997


these services first appeared in 1988 on sanyo shinkansen between shin-osaka , hakata using 6-car 0 series trains. 0 series 12-car sk units employed on these services 1989. 11 march 2000, replaced new 700 series hikari rail star services, , withdrawn on 21 april 2000.


grand hikari

these premier services operated between tokyo , hakata 11 march 1989 using jr west 16-car 100 series v sets 4 double-deck centre cars including restaurant car. these operated @ maximum speed of 230 km/h on sanyo shinkansen (compared 220 km/h other hikari services). 11 march 2000, restaurant car services discontinued on trains, , may 2002 onwards, few remaining grand hikari services limited sanyo shinkansen only. last grand hikari ran in november 2002.

family hikari

first appearing in summer of 1995, these seasonal services operated between shin-osaka , hakata during holiday periods using special 6-car 0 series sets (r2 , r24) included children s play area in car 3. seats reserved on these services.


hikari rail star

jr west began operating hikari rail star service start of new timetable on 11 march 2000. service limited sanyo shinkansen, , uses special 8-car 700 series trains distinctive livery , maximum speed of 285 km/h. jr west introduced service provide better competition against airlines on osaka-fukuoka route. these services not have green car accommodation, reserved seating cars feature 2+2 seating , 4-seat compartments instead of standard 3+2 arrangement in non-reserved seating cars. front row of seats in these cars feature power outlets laptop users. transformation of hikari rail star services sakura 2011, 8-car 700 series shinkansen trains used on service have been running on kodama services.
