this low mountain stage travelled department of vosges, haut-rhin. stage departed gérardmer racing officially starting between gérardmer , xonrupt-longemer. race headed east category 2 col de la schlucht @ 1,140 m (3,740 ft), , descended north-east valley floor, south-east, towards outskirts of orbey. route began climb category 3 col du wettstein @ 880 m (2,887 ft) before long 21 km (13 mi) descent east outskirts of turckheim. here, route headed south and, once again, road rose category 3 côte des cinq châteaux @ 560 m (1,837 ft), , followed category 2 côte de gueberschwihr @ 559 m (1,834 ft) before heading south-west. intermediate sprint took place @ linthal, before heading west biggest climb of day. category 1 le markstein @ 1,183 m (3,881 ft) gave 15 km (9 mi) ascent ski station, ascent continuing south-east category 3 le grand ballon @ 1,336 m (4,383 ft). route took fast 22 km (14 mi) descent continuing south-east cernay , wittelsheim, through pfastatt , finishing in mulhouse.
