the elliptical cupola covering late-baroque potocki chapel, designed pompeo ferrari , built 1727-1730, beautiful in cathedral. parietal tomb of archbishop teodor potocki (d. 1738), pronounced stanisław leszczyński king upon death of augustus ii strong, , epitaph of ignacy krasicki, poet , archbishop of gniezno (d. 1801).
the 14th-century kołudzki chapel renovated in 1647 consistent interior furnishings. 4 corners of world personified on mid-18th-century polychrome vault. early-baroque portal 17th-century renaissance grille gdańsk 1 of poland’s greatest blacksmithing achievements. foundation plaque of chapel has szymon kołudzki’s (d. 1656), portrait, epitaph , tombstone.
st. nicholas chapel, known dzierzgowski chapel, dates 14th century. gothic arcade has remains of 14th-century gothic sculptural ornamentation featuring hunting scenes engraved in artificial stone , mid-16th century renaissance polychrome. chapel embellished 2 precious renaissance tombstones: first sculpted red marble bartholommeo berecci , features reclining figure of abp. andrzej krzycki (d. 1573), humanist , politician; second abp. mikołaj dzierzgowski (d. 1559), supporter of queen bona sforza, , sculpted sandstone , red marble hieronim canavesi. there round tondo madonna of giovanni maria padovano in copestone.
the Łubieński chapel created 1642-1648 joining 2 medieval chapels , restructured along early-classicist lines in 1778. early-baroque portals c. 1640 made of marble , closed renaissance grilles gdańsk. early-baroque tomb of archbishop maciej Łubieński (d. 1652) made of marble , alabaster. altar painting 1646 has portraits of Łubieński family members.
interior
the cathedral three-nave basilica-looking structure polygonal presbytery , ambulatory , many adjacent chapels of noble , aristocratic families, funded head of family or monarch of poland. under tiled floor several discoveries made; these included relics of earlier pre-romanesque buildings , several tombs of former archbishops. in crypt of cathedral there 1006-year-old sepulchral stone inscription on display, oldest of kind in country, discovered archeologists. other aspects of crypt may include remaining fragments of walls of first temple funded mieszko of poland.
the presbytery , nave
in center of presbytery of cathedral stands golden baldachin , beneath silver gilded baroque reliquary - coffin of st. adalbert wooden, cedar, box dating twelfth century covered reliefs remains of saint inside. behind shrine stands red marble medieval tombstone dating 1480 commemorating patron. on north side of chancel (presbytery) there gold-plated stool emblem of primate stefan wyszyński , above throne hangs coat of arms of present archbishop of gniezno, józef kowalczyk. in addition, @ end of presbytery there large sacrificial altar relief of st. adalbert. above altar rainbow beam precious gothic crucifix linden tree dating around 1430. rest of nave consists of chairs faithful , small room church officials.
