speedlite trade name canon s line of external flashes use eos line of cameras. similar not confused nikon corporation s speedlight brand flashes. speedlite name used ricoh unrelated product line of flash units, such ricoh speedlite 202.


the brand names intended indicate strobe flashes produce shorter , more intense bursts of light earlier photographic lighting systems, such flashbulbs, or continuous lighting used in studio situations.


90 series flashes

key features of 580 ex ii make desirable built-in pc terminal, easy locking metal foot, faster recycling time, silent charge, easier-to-use battery cover , support setup through camera s menu system.


the unit sealed against moisture , weather conditions silicon gaskets around. better features on earlier model dropped el backlight on lcd (580ex ii uses simple led back-light visible bleed pattern) , designated master/slave switch. both units made in japan.


none of 580ex variants available in canon store nor canon product pages in 2016, suggesting both discontinued.


600 ex-rt

the speedlite 600ex-rt announced on march 2, 2012 alongside new canon eos 5d mark iii. 600 ex-rt features new bi-directional 2.4 ghz wireless radio communication, compatible also-announced speedlite st-e3-rt transmitter; backwards compatibility optical triggering of combination of speedlite 580ex ii, 580ex, 550ex, 430ex ii, 430ex, 420ex, 320ex, or 270ex ii flashes.


both 600ex-rt , st-e3-rt may subject legal restrictions of use when in radio transmission (rt) mode. official canon documentation accompanying these units, regions of use , restrictions , lists 58 countries units comply local radio wave regulations. countries not listed include: republic of south africa, israel, argentina, pakistan, name few. customers advised not use product in areas not designed .


st-e2 transmitter










the speedlite transmitter st-e2 camera-mounted infrared controller canon s flashes. allows multiple off-camera flashes fired in e-ttl mode without need connecting wires.


flashes being triggered st-e2 can assigned either group or group b, , st-e2 can configured user-set ratio of flash output between 2 groups, ratios varying 8:1 1:8 in half-stop increments.


high-speed sync supported st-e2, not support second-curtain synchronization or stroboscopic flash.


a built-in focus assist light allows st-e2 used camera focus in low light.


the speedlite 550 ex, 580ex, 580ex ii , 600 ex-rt (when used optical master) flashes use modulation of pre flash main flash tube communicating slave flashes. st-e2 uses modulated flash tube purpose, fitted near infra-red filter (it serves no other purpose). has quoted range of 10-15m indoors, , 8-10m outdoors.


the st-e2 uses single 2cr5 lithium battery, said 1500 transmissions.


st-e3-rt transmitter

the speedlite st-e3-rt announced on march 2, 2012. features new bi-directional 2.4 ghz wireless communications range of 30m, compatible also-announced speedlite 600ex-rt flash , upcoming speedlite 430ex iii-rt. st-e3-rt not have focus-assist light, uses more commonly available aa batteries, , supports high-speed sync.
