the university traces foundations dominican seminary established in 1538. raised status of university papal bull in apostolatus culmine, issued pope paul ii on 28 october 1538, , granted same rights , powers spanish university of alcalá de henares. organised in 4 faculties, following pattern of medieval european universities: theology, law, medicine , arts.


in 1801, university suspended due haitian occupation; reopened in 1815 after spanish colonial rule restored under rectorship of dr josé núñez de cáceres. however, forced close again in 1822 due conscription of students. after dominican republic established in 1844, attempt reopen university made president pedro santana in 1859, unsuccessful.


in 1866 instituto profesional (professional institute) created jose gabriel garcia , emiliano tejera in santo domingo, providing higher education in city. closed in 1891 reopened in 1895. on 16 november 1914, president ramón báez (who rector of institute) raised university status under name university of santo domingo . new university forced close occupation 1916 1924. after start of dictatorship of rafael leonidas trujillo in 1930, university unable operate independently; on 31 december 1961, after trujillo s death, law passed restoring autonomy.
