the giants struck first on rbi groundout candy maldonado, cardinals tied in third on vince coleman s rbi single. jeffrey leonard gave giants short-lived lead in fourth on solo homer, cards re-tied when ozzie smith tripled , willie mcgee drove him home single.

the cardinals took control of game in sixth plating 3 runs off giants starter rick reuschel. terry pendleton, curt ford, , pitcher greg mathews had rbi singles in rally. ken dayley pitched ninth , got save.

the giants pulled in series on strength of complete-game shutout dave dravecky. dravecky got runs needed in second on clark two-run homer. measure, jeffrey leonard added solo homer in fourth, second in 2 nlcs games. 2 more runs came across in eighth giants on rare ozzie smith throwing error.

it in game leonard aroused ire of cardinal fans going cadillac home run trot around bases. leonard spread out arms, airplane-style, kept left arm pinned side ( flap-down ). further irritate fans, leonard slowed walk between third , home.

in game 3, joe magrane (stl) , atlee hammaker (sf) set face off. matchup not expected quite low scoring series had been date. predictions correct, san francisco broke first 4 runs in first 3 innings, looking take series lead. in second inning, consecutive hits chili davis, clark , bob brenly put giants on board. yet home run leonard tacked on fourth run in third.

on leonard s next at-bat, however, bob forsch, had relieved starter magrane, plunked leonard in left shoulder first pitch, presumably in retaliation home-run trot antics. giants load bases in inning 1 out, forsch pitched out of it.

the cardinals heated things in sixth two-run home run jim lindeman, replaced injured jack clark, , triple willie mcgee. but, in seventh when made attack, not tying game, scoring 4 take lead, 6–4. 4 runs came on large rally, highlighted two-run single left fielder vince coleman.

with right-handed todd worrell pitching cards, manager roger craig pinch hit left-handed batter harry spilman robby thompson. spilman homered right field, putting new life in giants, 2 down. however, third baseman kevin mitchell flew out center field, , cards had completed stunning comeback.

cardinals slugger jack clark made appearance in series in game 3. nursing sprained ankle, came pinch-hitter , struck out looking. injury caused him left off roster world series, cardinals add pitcher.

saturday, october 10, 1987, @ candlestick park in san francisco

the giants knotted series @ 2–2 longball , complete-game pitching performance, time mike krukow. krukow touched 2 runs in second on rbi singles opposing pitcher danny cox , vince coleman, pitched shutout ball rest of way. robby thompson hit solo homer in fourth, jeffrey leonard put giants ahead 3–2 in fifth fourth homer in nlcs, , bob brenly closed out scoring solo shot in eighth.

tom herr put cardinals 1–0 in first off rick reuschel sacrifice fly, giants tied in half of first on kevin mitchell rbi single.

the cardinals looked on verge of breaking open against reuschel in third. tony peña , pitcher bob forsch led off inning consecutive singles, , vince coleman beat out bunt, loading bases none out. ozzie smith produce sacrifice fly, however, , herr bounced double play end threat. mitchell tied @ 2–2 giants in third on solo homer.

terry pendleton gave cards lead in fourth in nip-and-tuck game smashing two-out triple , scoring when reuschel mishandled throw clark on ground ball hit john morris.

the giants answered in bottom of fourth when jose uribe drove in 2 runs bases-loaded single 4–3 giants lead. mike aldrete pinch-hit reuschel , hit sacrifice fly , robby thompson drove in last run triple. joe price relieved reuschel , pitched 5 innings of one-hit, shutout relief.

tuesday, october 13, 1987, @ busch stadium (ii) in st. louis, missouri

facing elimination, cardinals rolled out ace, john tudor, face dave dravecky once again. tudor injured of first half of 1987, rebounded go 10–2 in second half of season. and, great 1985 season, tudor golden in postseason. scattered 6 hits in 7 innings , struck out 6 before giving way todd worrell.

tudor got run needed in second inning when tony peña hit appeared routine fly ball right, candy maldonado misplayed , fell triple. josé oquendo drove pena home sacrifice fly.

ken dayley pitched ninth second save of series.

wednesday, october 14, 1987, @ busch stadium (ii) in st. louis, missouri

the cardinals gave starter danny cox quick 4–0 lead jumping on giants starter atlee hammaker in second. singles terry pendleton, tony peña , willie mcgee produced first run , josé oquendo, had hit 1 home run during regular season, drilled three-run shot left. st. louis added 2 more runs in sixth on two-run single tommy herr. cox went distance, scattering 8 hits , striking out five. victory gave cardinals third pennant in 6 years , fifteenth overall. downside in victory pendleton suffering strained ribcage while running bases, limited availability in world series.
