bucharest s crime rate rather low in comparison other european capital cities, number of total offenses declining 51% between 2000 , 2004, , 7% between 2012 , 2013. violent crime rate in bucharest remains low, 11 murders , 983 other violent offenses taking place in 2007. although violent crimes fell 13% in 2013 compared 2012, 19 murders (18 of suspects arrested) recorded.


although in 2000s, number of police crackdowns on organized crime gangs occurred, such cămătaru clan, organized crime has little impact on public life. petty crime, however, more common, particularly in form of pickpocketing, occurs on city s public transport network. confidence tricks common in 1990s, in regards tourists, frequency of these incidents has since declined. however, in general, theft reduced 13.6% in 2013 compared 2012. levels of crime higher in southern districts of city, particularly in ferentari, socially disadvantaged area.


although presence of street children problem in bucharest in 1990s, numbers have declined in recent years, lying @ or below average of major european capital cities. documentary called children underground depicted life of romanian street kids in 2001. estimated 1,000 street children still inhabit city, of whom engage in petty crime , begging.
