the brazil nut tree species in monotypic genus bertholletia. native guianas, venezuela, brazil, eastern colombia, eastern peru, , eastern bolivia. occurs scattered trees in large forests on banks of amazon river, rio negro, tapajós, , orinoco. genus named after french chemist claude louis berthollet.
