the second stage of tour started @ racecourse in york heading city centre travelled west yorkshire through towns of knaresborough, harrogate, silsden, addingham, keighley, haworth, hebden bridge, mytholmroyd, elland, huddersfield, honley , holmfirth. tour climbed on category 2 côte de holme moss @ 524 m (1,719 ft), , descended valley of woodhead pass. passing derbyshire on northern tip of peak district under shadow of bleaklow plateau climbed on langsett moors. traversing across moor route crossed ewden valley , headed towards village of bradfield. here route descended towards city of sheffield stage 2 finished.
during stage, sacha modolo withdrew tour due illness. cyril lemoine took lead king of mountains jersey, jens voigt, having scored points during day. blel kadri , thomas voeckler first 2 riders on category 2 climb of holme moss, both riders later returning peloton. towards finish, alberto contador , chris froome each took opportunity test opposition, reducing peloton leading group of 21 riders short, steep, category 4 climb of jenkin road hill. vincenzo nibali took lead 2 km (1 mi) remaining, , held short lead finish line.
