the exact history of temple not determined based on inscriptions evidence, temple believed have been built during chola period during 10th-11th centuries.


as per hindu legend , sthalapurana, shiva worshipped agni, fire god @ place , presiding deity came known agnipureeswarar , temple tank called agni theertham. per legend, bhudevi, consort of vishnu wanted install linga , worship shiva. banasura, son, believed have dug linga @ place, not lift it. lingam in place believed appear tilted (called konapiran) on account of it. shiva pleased devotion of bhudevi , appeared in dancing form in front of her. believed place shiva turned bricks gold nayanar sundarar.
