the first stage began on headrow, outside victorian town hall in leeds. tour headed eastwards through city centre towards quarry hill, navigating sheepscar interchange onto a61 , heading northwards through city districts of scott hall, moortown , alwoodley towards harewood house ceremonial start took place. attended duke , duchess of cambridge, , prince harry. following departure harewood, tour went along wharfe valley passing through otley, burley in wharfedale , home of cow , calf rocks, ilkley moor. race headed north via a65 market town of skipton, before passing yorkshire dales national park. after passing northwards through part of wharfedale, wensleydale , through hawes, route continued on buttertubs pass , down through swaledale reeth. race headed south-east cross last categorised climb of day @ grinton moor before passing through leyburn, brewery town of masham , cathedral city of ripon. finally, travelling southwards, on a61, through killinghall , finishing @ west park in harrogate.


a 50 km (31 mi) break saw jens voigt secure king of mountains jersey day, before returning peloton. finale of stage saw mark cavendish crash during sprint, following collision simon gerrans. cavendish suffered separated right shoulder injury, , had retire tour after completing stage. sprint won marcel kittel, repeating opening stage victory previous year.


prizegiving attended duke , duchess of cambridge, , prince harry, following helicopter flight earlier engagement @ harewood house. bernard hinault in attendance, in official capacity tour de france representative, on podium.
