cooper s sandpiper, calidris × cooperi described (as tringa cooperi) spencer fullerton baird in 1858 based on specimen collected on long island, new york, in may 1833 , deposited @ american museum of natural history. named after conchologist william cooper, collected bird.


when john cox examined slides of specimen in february 1988, found number of features in common australian birds. birds appeared of same size , structure, several plumage features in common including heavily streaked head , neck rusty wash, split supercilium, , identically-patterned upperparts feathers. although bill of cooper s specimen straight (compared drooping bill of cox s), due damage , distortion. birds differ insofar cooper s specimen has spotted, not streaked breast. accounted plumage stage, given differences in times of year when specimens collected; also, of cox s sandpipers seen in australia have had similar underparts markings cooper s specimen. nonetheless, have directly compared cooper s , cox s sandpipers feel not identical.
