the first lifeboat of 2 ss dwinsk rescued crew of uss siboney on 21 june 1918.


purchased scandinavian america line on 5 april 1906, ship renamed c.f. tietgen after carl frederik tietgen, danish merchant. ship operated on copenhagen-kristiania-kristiansand-new york route through 1913. on 28 june 1906 tietgen collided , sank e. c. hay 70 ft schooner built in 1873 , owned , sailed captain william hay denbigh. without loss of life. in july 1913 ship chartered nordisk film a/s filming of atlantis.


later in 1913, ship sold russian american line , renamed dwinsk, , operating between libau , new york 10 february 1914. on 20 september 1914, dwinsk began sailing on archangel-hammerfest-new york route.


in 1917, control of ship passed cunard line reflagged under british flag, , retaining existing name. on 18 june 1918, under command of captain henry nelson, while steaming france newport news, virginia, dwinsk torpedoed u-151 400 miles (640 km) bermuda. after ship sank, u-151 remained in area, using survivors in 7 lifeboats lure try sink additional allied ships.


later same day, uss von steuben spotted wreckage , 7 lifeboats, , approached survivors, narrowly averted torpedo strike launched u-151.


six of lifeboats rescued other ships; seventh lifeboat, in charge of second officer, joseph william coppin (born 1881, st neot, cornwall), 22 men aboard never heard again. uss siboney rescued 2 boats on 21 june, , uss rondo picked final boat on 28 june.
