the miaa sponsors 20 sports – ten men s , ten women s. miaa schools additional sports compete independently or part of nearby conference. on july 1, 1992, miaa entered new era when conference changed name missouri intercollegiate athletic association mid-america intercollegiate athletics association. name change originated in 1989, when pittsburg state university , washburn university became first schools outside state of missouri gain membership in miaa.
founding , former members
the miaa established in 1912 14 member institutions. included 5 state teachers colleges in missouri – warrensburg teachers college (now university of central missouri), northeast missouri state teachers college (now truman state university), northwest missouri state teacher s college (now northwest missouri state university), missouri state normal school of third district (now southeast missouri state university, , southwest missouri state teacher s college (now missouri state university). included 9 private schools – central methodist university, central wesleyan college, culver–stockton college, drury university, missouri valley college, missouri wesleyan college, tarkio college, westminster college, , william jewell college. central missouri , northwest missouri state remain members in miaa.
in 1924 conference reorganized include public schools, , conference records tend begin date. schools left behind in reorganization went on later form missouri college athletic union, in time become current heart of america athletic conference in naia.
first expansions of conference
the missouri school of mines, (later university of missouri–rolla , missouri university of science & technology), joined in 1935 bring membership 6 schools. membership remained @ 6 until lincoln university joined in 1970, followed university of missouri–st. louis in 1980.
1980s
in 1986, southwest baptist university brought conference membership 8 schools. in 1989, pittsburg state, washburn, missouri southern state college , missouri western state college – formerly members of central states intercollegiate conference – began competition in 1989–90 season.
1990s , 2000s

southeast missouri state left miaa following 1990–91 season move on ncaa division i, , replaced emporia state university in 1991–92 season. missouri–st. louis left miaa in 1996, did missouri–rolla in 2005. lincoln forfeited membership in 1999.
fort hays state university joined miaa in 2006 , university of nebraska omaha entered league in 2008.
on july 3, 2007, southwest baptist granted independent status football team, while remaining teams stay in miaa.
on july 8, 2009, miaa ceo council voted remain 12-team league foreseeable future, denying application rockhurst university (which not have football team wanted compete in other sports). vote ended short term speculation league expanding 16 teams divided 2 divisions.
2010–present

lincoln rejoined conference in 2010 , in same year, miaa ceo council voted extend invitations university of central oklahoma , northeastern state university become members of league beginning in 2012–13, lindenwood university , university of nebraska @ kearney. in 2012, schools started play each other in football , play no non-conference games. @ first, teams closest geographically played each other every year , rotate through other conference members in other years. move expand league spurred @ least in part after northwest missouri during national championship game run had problems finding non-conference teams play resulting in 2010 having 10-game rather 11-game schedule. in 2011, nebraska–omaha joined summit league , moved division after 2010–11 season.
as nebraska–omaha departed in 2011, membership of miaa downsized 11. central oklahoma, northeastern state, nebraska–kearney, , lindenwood joined in 2012–13, pushing membership 15. league returned 14 institutions when truman left in 2013 join great lakes valley conference (glvc).
southwest baptist rejoined miaa in football 2013 football season, meant schools play 11-game conference football schedule no non-conference games.
in 2014, southwest baptist , lincoln joined glvc football only. puts of football schools in miaa can play each other now, instead of rotating.
commissioners
in july 1981, ken b. jones appointed first full-time miaa commissioner. held position 16 years, retiring in 1997. ralph mcfillen succeeded jones, serving 10 years until retiring in 2007. jim johnson succeeded mcfillen in july 2007 , served commissioner until september 2010. bob boerigter succeeded johnson on september 20, 2010 commissioner , retired on january 27, 2017. on september 7, 2016, announced mike racy become fifth commissioner of miaa, effective january 30, 2017.
