prophylactic paste (polishing paste)

prophylactic paste contains abrasives vary in size, shape, , hardness. based on these variants, pastes available in fine, medium, coarse , super-coarse grits. there various flavours of prophylactic paste available. prophylactic pastes contain fluoride aid in remineralization of enamel surface , others reduce dentinal sensitivity.

rubber cups, called prophy cups, used in hand-piece. polishing paste, prophylactic paste, containing fluoride, used rubber cups polishing. rubber cups should not used on cementum area may remove layer of cementum @ cervical area. there 2 popular types of prophy cups: 4 webs , 6 webs. risk of generating frictional heat, , increased abrasion tooth surface may result increased contact time, increased speed of rotation, , increased pressure of cup on tooth. short intermittent strokes should used in order avoid damage.

air-powder polishing used specially designed handpiece. device called prophy-jet. delivers air-powder slurry of warm water , sodium bicarbonate polishing. effective removal of extrinsic stains , soft deposits. there several contraindications air polishing. these include: sodium restricted diet, hypertension, respiratory illnesses, infectious diseases, renal insufficiency, addison s or cushing s disease, , medications (mineral corticoid steroids, anti-diuretics, potassium supplements).
