erpingham gate


there 2 gates leading cathedral grounds, both on tombland. ethelbert gate takes name saxon church stood nearby. original gate destroyed in riot of 1272 , replacement built in 14th century. has 2 storeys, upper chapel dedicated st ethelbert , decorated flushwork. in 1420 sir thomas erpingham, benefactor city, had gate bears name built, sited opposite west door of cathedral leading close.
