1839 – irish medical association
on 29 may 1839, union of physicians , surgeons formed @ royal college of surgeons in dublin.

the group lapsed 1846 1852. on 7 june 1853, congress held in dublin re-establish association, , in 1882 became incorporated irish medical association. on 1 january 1936, ima merged irish branch of british medical association form irish free state medical union. later renamed medical association of Éire (ima & bma), became ima in 1950.
1962 – irish medical union
in 1957 negotiations between ima , irish government on employment conditions doctors broke down government announcing ima not registered trade union , not recognised negotiating partner.
a debate began within organisation, between wanted register trade union , felt industrial trade union membership incompatible being professional association clinical/patient responsibilities or termed learned profession .
in 1962, irish medical union established, initially, sub-section of ima , became break-away group under presidency of dr johnny cox, general practitioner , farmer in delvin, co. westmeath. medical doctors trade union housed @ offices of ima in fitzwilliam place, dublin 2, , later moved separate offices in northumberland road, [dublin 4], harcourt street [dublin 2], , finally, drumcondra, dublin.
soon after split government agreed engage in direct negotiations irish medical association (ima) without requiring formally register trade union. following creation of breakaway imu in 1962 divided medical doctors representation in republic of ireland on 2 decades weakening influence on emerging healthcare public policy , formation of state s health boards structures in 1970.
1984 – irish medical organisation
in january 1984 ima , imu amalgamated become medical union, name later changed irish medical organisation.
five years later group of hospital consultants formed irish hospital consultants association (ihca) represent specific interests of senior medical specialists. established in 1989 , maintains has 1,800 of irish medical consultants within ranks.
today irish medical organisation (imo) negotiating body acts on behalf of doctors in ireland, recognised negotiating purposes under trade union act 1941, though ihca represents consultant grades in official negotiations health service executive hse , department of health.
the role of imo represent doctors in ireland , provide them relevant services. organised 4 craft groups : general practitioners; consultants; non-consultant hospital doctors (nchds); , public health & community medicine doctors. committed development of caring, efficient , effective health services in ireland.
