weehawken operates within faulkner act, formally known optional municipal charter law, under council-manager form of municipal government. governing body consists of five-member council elected serve four-year terms of office on concurrent basis in non-partisan elections held in may. 2 council members elected township at-large , remainder chosen each of 3 wards. council selects mayor among members in reorganization meeting held in first week of july after election.


as of 2016, mayor of weehawken richard f. turner (at large), has served mayor 25 years , first became mayor in 1990 after stanley iacono didn t run reelection. other members of township council carmela silvestri-ehret (1st ward), rosemary j. lavagnino (2nd ward), robert j. sosa (3rd ward) , robert e. zucconi (at large), serving terms of office expiring on june 30, 2018.
