first career

guillard showed interest in printing business 1500 when still teenager. guillard first married berthold rembolt in 1502. first husband worked earliest french printer ulrich gering. printing business went took on small hotel housed family , employees.

rembolt died in 1519. paris businesses , crafts in sixteenth century regulated guild system. women not allowed own business, allowed these guilds take on business of husband after death. guillard took on management of husband s print shop after death. took on duties of proofreading latin publications. works recognized beauty , accuracy. in fact built such reputation of accuracy commissioned bishop of verona publish works. associated guillaume des boys, brother-in-law.

second career

in 1520 guillard married claude chevallon, bookseller printed theological books. time forward, guillard known madame chevallon. widowed second time in 1537. thereafter, madame chevallon ran printing business on own. business significant: owned 4 or 5 printing presses between 12 , 25 employees , stock of 13000 books. catered students, professional or religious clientele, printed anti-protestant books, , offered books in latin greek.

she died in 1557.
