hypsometric tints colors used indicate elevation, contour lines. can used depict ranges of elevation bands of color, in graduated scheme, or color ramp applied contour lines themselves. typical scheme progresses dark greens lower elevations through yellows/browns, , on grays , white @ highest elevations. hypsometric tinting of maps , globes accompanied similar method of bathymetric tinting convey depth of oceans; lighter shades of blue represent shallower water such continental shelf , darker shades deeper regions.
