in 2006, ministry of panchayati raj named sivaganga 1 of country s 250 backward districts out of total of 640. consequently, 1 of 6 districts in tamil nadu receiving funds backward regions grant fund programme (brgf).


agriculture

the vast majority of workforce dependent on agriculture (72.8%). in fact, principal crop of sivaganga district paddy while majority of district has red soil. other crops grown sugarcane, groundnut, pulses, , cereal such millet. in response, tamil nadu agricultural university plans set state s first red soil dryland research centre in sivaganga district soon.

moser baer clean energy limited (mbcel) has commissioned 5 mw grid connected solar pv project @ sivaganga, tamil nadu. project awarded sapphire industrial infrastructure pvt. ltd., wholly owned subsidiary of farm, through competitive bidding process conducted tamil nadu renewable development agency. project is, then, implemented under 50 mwp generation based incentive scheme of ministry of new , renewable energy, government of india.
