john rowand son of dr. john rowand, surgeon in montreal. though possessing elementary education, rowand joined firm mctavish, frobisher , company @ sixteen years. firm s head, simon mctavish, leading share-holder in north west company.

1803 saw rowand posted fort augustus, nwc companion hudson s bay company s edmonton house, apprentice clerk. apart regular duties there, rowand participated in hunting bison , indulged in of notable pastimes through years: horse-riding. on next few years, rowand positioned either @ fort augustus or of nearby nwc posts.


rowand suffered broken leg riding accident in 1810. rescued louise (lisette) umfreville (daughter of edward umfreville), metis woman nursed him health. subsequently, john rowand engaged louise in country marriage, , received herd of horses dowry. according traditions, rowand adopted several of louise s children man. john , louise had @ least 5 children together. in 1838 when catholic priests passed through fort edmonton john , louise did not marriage solemnized, after living 30 years seem not have felt need external affirmation of relationship. rowand described louise old friend mother of children , remain connected until death in 1849.

the battle of 7 oaks in 1816 threatened further escalation of violence between north west company , hudson s bay company servants. meanwhile, in aftermath of battle, nwc lost several of investors wary of company s continued existence. in move brokered end hostilities between companies, shareholders in nwc agreed merge hudson s bay company, signing agreement in 1821 saw name dissolved , employees & properties absorbed under hbc name. agreement named several persons chief factors , chief traders @ time; fort augustus consequently being absorbed fort edmonton, john rowand made chief trader @ edmonton.
