university of michigan

after graduating university of michigan in 1965, bay remained in ann arbor assistant wrestling coach 4 years. in 1970, took on michigan s head wrestling coach following retirement of cliff keen. remained michigan s head wrestling coach 4 years. in last 2 season @ head wrestling coach, teams undefeated in regular season, won back-to-back big ten conference championships, ranked no. 1 in country, , finished third , second in ncaa tournament. resigned in 1974 after being named college wrestling coach of year.

after stepping down michigan s wrestling coach, bay employed university of michigan alumni association, serving associate executive director. 1976 1980, bay served president of united states wrestling federation. in 1980, named usa wrestling man of year.


university of oregon

in june 1981, bay hired athletic director @ university of oregon. continued in position until 1984. bay took position amid ncaa investigation of past rules violations, including fake school credits , creation of secret fund @ local travel agency. in december 1981, ncaa imposed sanctions included two-year probation on football program, no bowl games, , loss of 12 football scholarships on 2 years. bay said @ time sanctions handicap program, won t cripple us. continue competitive in areas, including penalized.


bay s time @ oregon marked disputes track coach bill dellinger , nike founders phil knight , bill bowerman. bay first drew fire when terminated practice whereby nike supplied free equipment members of track team. bay asserted practice violated ncaa rules, phil knight angrily protested. in memoirs, bay wrote replied: mr. knight, agree have every right send our guys free equipment. can t stop you. every time do, ll have make athlete ineligible , ll have send stuff right nike. bay refused accept proposed donation bowerman build new athletic building on grounds bowerman wanted control use of building, , bay refused accept condition. building not built until after bay left oregon.


ohio state

in may 1984, bay hired athletic director @ ohio state university. announced @ start of tenure take strong stance on academics , stated expected coaches , staff work within rules , expected buckeyes strong contenders in 30 men s , women s sports. during bay s 4 years athletic director, 1984 ohio state buckeyes football team won big ten conference championship in 1984 9–3 record. 1985 team compiled 9–3 record, defeated byu in florida citrus bowl, , finished season ranked no. 11 in coaches poll. 1986 team big ten co-champion, compiled 10–3 record, defeated texas a&m in cotton bowl, , finished season ranked no. 6 in final coaches poll. after 1987 buckeyes compiled 6–4–1 record, head football coach earl bruce fired. bay refused carry out order fire bruce had 81–26–1 (.755) record , had won or shared 4 big ten championships. bay resigned in protest. bay said @ time, s shame. s dark day ohio state. commented more broadly on skewed values dominating college football:

new york yankees

in february 1988, hired executive vice president , chief operating officer of new york yankees. given responsibility everyday administrative operation of team. bay resigned in june 1988, after 4 months yankees. lou piniella had resigned 1 week earlier club s general manager. bay complained owner george steinbrenner trying usurp power, , left yankees join starbright group inc., television production company. years later, bay reflected on time steinbrenner: gave me job when didn t have one, knew steinbrenner s track record. ... there side george steinbrenner people don t see. s put lot of well-known athletes down on luck on payroll ... , of them had little do. ... fascinating time.


university of minnesota

in december 1988, bay hired men s athletic director @ university of minnesota. bay replaced paul giel, had been athletic director 16 years. giel fired after ncaa investigation found 40 rule violations in school s athletic department , imposed sanctions on university s athletic program. bay remained minnesota s men s athletic director 3 years. during tenure, bay secured approval of program invest $41 million in improvement of university s sports facilities included construction of mariucci arena , renovation of williams arena. however, ncaa investigation of misconduct preceding bay s hiring continued during bay s tenure. in december 1990, ncaa issued findings alleging major violations university in improperly paying cash, extending loans , conferring other benefits on athletes. bay noted of alleged violations occurred before 1988 , related activities of former acting director of university s office of minority , special student affairs, had been fired , convicted in 1989 of stealing approximately $200,000 university. in january 1991, bay announced university had issued 300-page response ncaa in admitted 18 of 21 violations, argued no penalty should imposed.


cleveland indians

in september 1991, bay hired president of cleveland indians baseball team, , took on in january 1992. year before bay joined club, 1991 indians finished in last place 57–105 (.352) record. during bay s season ceo, 1992 indians improved 19 wins on prior year, finished in fourth place in american league east, , compiled 76-86 (.469) record. based on marked improvement in tam s performance, indians selected baseball america major league baseball s organization of year @ end of 1992 season. despite club s improvement, bay clashed team owner dick jacobs on running team, , bay resigned in november 1992 after 11 months club.


san diego state

in january 1995, bay hired athletic director @ san diego state university. remained in position 1995 2003. during tenure, university built new basketball arena (cox arena), new basketball stadium (tony gwynn stadium), aztec athletic center, , track , soccer field during bay s tenure, sdsu built cox arena basketball; tony gwynn stadium baseball; aztec athletic center, , track , soccer field called sports deck. in february 1999, hired steve fisher university s head basketball coach. through 2012 season, fisher had compiled 258–157 record @ sdsu , 5 appearances in ncaa tournament.


bay s resigned under pressure university administration after california state university auditor s report found there pattern of mismanagement within school s equipment room , lax oversight of department. san diego state president stephen weber said @ time bay have been fired had not resigned. weber stated, don t think rick has same views legitimacy of audit or scope of implications do. bay said not sign off on audit knew flawed. had asked evidence of of allegations, none provided. university said in audit, concur, on every point though m sitting there athletic director , have pretty reason believe not true, bay said. audit should @ least investigated before concur. president weber , got head knocking.
