brazil nut trees produce fruit exclusively in pristine forests, disturbed forests lack large-bodied bees of genera bombus, centris, epicharis, eulaema, , xylocopa ones capable of pollinating tree s flowers, different bee genera being primary pollinators in different areas, , different times of year. brazil nuts have been harvested plantations, production low , not economically viable.


the fruit takes 14 months mature after pollination of flowers. fruit large capsule 10–15 cm (3.9–5.9 in) in diameter, resembling coconut endocarp in size , weighing 2 kg (4.4 lb). has hard, woody shell 8–12 mm (0.31–0.47 in) thick, contains 8 24 triangular seeds 4–5 cm (1.6–2.0 in) long (the brazil nuts ) packed segments of orange.


the capsule contains small hole @ 1 end, enables large rodents agouti gnaw open. eat of seeds inside while burying others later use; of these able germinate new brazil nut trees. of seeds planted agoutis in shady places, , young saplings may have wait years, in state of dormancy, tree fall , sunlight reach it, when starts growing again. capuchin monkeys have been reported open brazil nuts using stone anvil.
