lucas has stated opening crawl inspired opening crawls used @ beginning of each episode of original flash gordon , buck rogers film serials, inspiration lucas write of star wars saga. development of opening crawl came part of collaboration between lucas , seasoned film title designer dan perri. in 1976, lucas invited perri industrial light & magic, lucasfilm s post-production operation @ van nuys, california. perri, had worked on close encounters of third kind , exorcist, suggested take inspiration 1939 cecil b. demille film, union pacific, opening credits shown distorted sharp perspective , rolling along railroad track towards distant vanishing point. lucas keen on idea , perri developed sketches , prototype mechanical artwork. 1 of earliest iterations of opening crawl evidenced in storyboards drawn production artist alex tavoularis, depicting title “the star wars” three-dimensional logo.


perri designed logotype, consisting of block-capital letters filled stars , skewed towards vanishing point follow same perspective opening crawl. lucas rejected perri s logo due readability problems, turning instead graphic designer suzy rice, art director @ los angeles advertising agency seiniger advertising. lucas had commissioned rice design promotional brochure distributed cinema theatre owners. instructed rice produce logo intimidate viewer, , reportedly asked logo appear fascist in style. rice, inspired historical german typography, produced bold logotype using outlined, modified helvetica black. after feedback lucas, rice decided join s , t of star , r , s of wars. lucas s producer, gary kurtz, found rice s logo worked in opening title; logo modified further flatten pointed tips on letter w before inserted final cut. while perri s skewed logo did not appear on-screen, used on pre-release print advertising, , featured prominently on film posters promoting release of star wars on cinema billboards in 1977 (notably tom jung s style ‘a’ poster, style ‘b’ poster brothers hildebrandt , tom chantrell s style ‘c’ poster).


in 2005 interview, george lucas described how final phrasing of text star wars came about. crawl such hard thing because have careful re not using many words people don t understand. s poem. showed first crawl bunch of friends of mine in 1970s. went on 6 paragraphs 4 sentences each. brian de palma there... . de palma helped edit text form used in film.
