in 1987, newspaper lost high-profile libel action brought jeffrey archer, leading award of £500,000 in damages, on allegations of archer s involvement prostitute, monica coghlan. editor of daily star, lloyd turner, sacked 6 weeks after trial. however, newspaper stood story, , on 19 july 2001 archer found guilty of perjury , perverting course of justice @ 1987 trial , sentenced total of 4 years imprisonment. paper later launched bid reclaim £2.2m – original payout plus interest , damages.


hillsborough disaster

on 18 april 1989, 3 days after hillsborough disaster in 96 liverpool f.c. fans fatally injured @ fa cup semi-final game, daily star ran front-page headline dead fans robbed drunk thugs , alleging liverpool fans had stolen fans injured or killed in tragedy. these allegations, along claims fans had attacked police officers aiding injured, published in several other newspapers, though content of front-page article sun on 19 april caused controversy. later inquiry showed of claims made false.


madeleine mccann

both daily star , sunday equivalent, stablemates daily express , sunday express, featured heavy coverage of disappearance of madeleine mccann in may 2007. in 2008, mccann family sued star , express libel. action concerned more 100 stories across daily express, daily star , sunday equivalents, accused mccanns of involvement in daughter s disappearance. newspapers coverage regarded mccanns grossly defamatory. in settlement @ high court of justice, newspapers agreed run front-page apology mccanns on 19 march 2008, publish apology on front pages of sunday editions on 23 march , make statement of apology @ high court. agreed pay costs , substantial damages, mccanns plan use aid search daughter. daily star apologised printing stories suggesting couple responsible for, or may responsible for, death of daughter madeleine , covering , stated recognise such suggestion absolutely untrue , kate , gerry innocent of involvement in daughter s disappearance.


volcanic ash front page

on 21 april 2010, in aftermath of 2010 eyjafjallajökull eruption, star splashed computer-generated image on front page of british airways flight 9, in 1982 encountered volcanic ash , suffered temporary loss of engines. image, taken documentary, accompanied headline terror plane hits ash cloud , without indication on front page image computer-generated. splash, on first day flights restarted after six-day closure of uk airspace due volcanic ash, led removal of paper newsagents @ uk airports.


grand theft auto rothbury

on 21 july 2010, paper ran story jerry lawton claiming rockstar games planning instalment of grand theft auto series of video games based around then-recent shootings carried out raoul moat. amid outcry @ inaccuracy of story, apology published paper on 24 july making no attempt verify truth of of claims, publishing claimed cover, criticising rockstar alleged plans without questioning likelihood, making no attempt contact rockstar before publishing, , obtaining statements grieving relative of 1 of moat s victims. paper claimed have paid substantial damages rockstar result, rockstar donated charity.

resignation richard peppiatt

in march 2011, journalist richard peppiatt resigned daily star open letter richard desmond. in letter, peppiatt accused star of demonising muslims, supporting english defence league (edl), fabricating stories, ignoring foreign news , paying low wages staff. daily star said in defence peppiatt casual reporter , bore resentment on being denied promotion. denied supported edl or anti-islam.
