this relatively fast , flat stage travelled department of pas de calais, through departments of somme, aisne, , marne. stage started heading south through bapaume, péronne, ham, tergnier , chauny. route began head east, on category 4 climb of côte de coucy-le-château-auffrique, intermediate sprint 12 km (7 mi) later @ pinon. followed category 4 climb of côte de roucy, , road east bourgogne. finally, race headed south reims.
arnaud gérard, tom leezer, luis maté , jérôme pineau took part in escape, ahead of peloton. crashes occurred during day of sidewinds, along second day of rain, forcing retirement of xabier zandio , jesús hernández, amongst others. escapees each brought peloton 20 km (12 mi) remaining, maté managing stay in front further 8 km (5 mi). marcel kittel had mechanical problem in final 2 km (1 mi), , michał kwiatkowski attacked 1 km (1 mi) remaining. however, sprint won andré greipel who, along other sprinters, caught kwiatkowski before finish.
