the fair named edmonton exhibition founding in 1879 until 1964, when renamed klondike days. name change coincided introduction of kitsch theme associated 1890s , klondike gold rush. gold rush had taken place several hundreds of miles northwest. edmonton stopping point prospectors headed yukon territory on all-canadian overland route .

the name changed capital ex, in 2006. there controversy on change in name klondike days, many locals continuing refer exhibition klondike days or k-days.

ken knowles, president of northlands, explained rebranding “... more name. programming , opportunity showcase best of region , province”. name change recognized @ 2007 alberta tourism awards, knowles stated “this recognition tourism industry particularly gratifying reinforces our ongoing efforts through capital ex continue celebrate our province , build alberta pride.”

before 2012 event, northlands announced capital ex name retired, , new name chosen public vote. event goers chose k-days 6 names offered. new name fair announced on july 29, 2012. original klondike days name not 1 of 6 options available.
