a. a. fleayi has total body length between 100 , 110 cm wingspans of 1.9–2.3 m, , weighs 3.5–5.5 kg. females larger (longer larger beak) , 15% heavier males. become sexually mature @ 4–6 years of age.
the largest wingspan recorded eagle of tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle, female killed in 1931 had wingspan of 284 cm (112 in), , female measured barely smaller @ 279 cm (9 ft 2 in).
fledged juveniles tawny brown blond nape , dark tail , flight feathers. plumage darkens after many months until black. bases of adults primary feathers pale silver, giving window appearance when viewed below. males sooty brown reddish-golden nape.
outside breeding season, tasmanian wedge-tailed eagles quiet, although produce range of specific, rather gentle calls. found in pairs or family. during breeding season, aerial displays common sight.
