balkrishna bhagwant borkar born on 30 november 1910 in bucolic village of borim, goa situated on banks of zuari river. atmosphere in house pious , there used recitals of bhajans, kirtans, holy scripts , songs of saints of maharashtra. household rule every child supposed learn new abhangs heart.
it said bakibaab once forgot learn new abhang , when turn recite, composed abhnag on fly. people listening astonished , not believe young baki have done , asked compose 1 more abhang. surprised them again composing 1 more abhang , ended verse baki mhane (so says baki).
bakibaab s mother tongue konkani , did schooling till second grade in marathi medium. goa @ time under colonial rule of portuguese , baki had complete further education in portuguese language. acquired portuguese teachers diploma. not continue formal education beyond point because of lack of funds , had find himself job. worked teacher in various schools in goa 1930 1945. later left bombay (mumbai) edited konkani periodicals amacha gomatak , porjecho awaj. in november 1955 joined aakashwani (all india radio) , worked there until retirement in 1970.
bakibaab s first collection of poems pratibha published in 1930. 20 years of age @ time. enthralled nature, goa s natural beauty , aptly depicted in poems , work. when dr. rammanohar lohia went goa in 1946 announce liberation movement, bakibaab jumped freedom struggle without moment s notice. composition goyan lohia aaylore (lohia has come goa) became quite famous. leaving behind household of ten supported him , sacrificing secure government job, jumped in wholeheartedly movement , took mission spread patriotism through poems.
bakibaab forte diverse sensibility, multi-coloured imagery , easy showcase joys , sorrows of life. works nature, patriotism, body , soul, sensuous , meditative, individual , society. poet of goa, poet of maharashtra. poet of india. awarded padma shri, india s fourth highest civilian award, president s. radhakrishnan in recognition of distinguished service in field of literature & education. awarded tamrapatra (copper plaque) in 1974 government of india meritorious services cause of india s freedom. bakibaab died on 8 july 1984.
